Angeles City launches ‘pusong mamon’ malunggay bread

ANGELES CITY — The city government of Angeles, in its fight against malnutrition, will be launching a bun with malunggay called “pusong mamon” on July 4.

The launch will be led by Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr., according to his Chief Adviser IC Calaguas.

“Alam naman po natin gaano ka-healthy ang malunggay. Madalas po may mga bata na hindi kumakain ng gulay. Kaya naman inisipan po natin ng paraan paano ito makakain ng ating mga anak na hindi tinatanggihan,” Calaguas said.

Calaguas said “pusong mamon” is actually Mayor Lazatin’s way to complement the national government’s feeding program.

The buns, along with milk, will be distributed to malnourished children in the city who were identified by the Barangay Nutrition Scholars of the City Nutrition Office headed by Jermaine Jam Aguila during the “Operation Timbang” last February.

“For three months the city will provide them with food supplements and weigh them again after,” said Calaguas, who served as the City Nutrition Action Officer during the time of Mayor Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin from 2004 to 2007.

A total of 1,500 children aged 5 and below were identified as malnourished.

“Pusong Mamon” will be launched during the kick off of the city’s celebration for Nutrition Month on July 4, in partnership with Luchie Lozano of Giada’s Bakery.

Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, who spearheaded the taste test, said Mayor Lazatin will initially distribute 500 buns to kids on July 4.

“Mabusisi po ang naging preparation natin sa paggawa nitong pusong mamon. Tiniyak po natin na ayos po sa magiging panlasa ng mga kids natin,” Manuel said.

Vitamin A supplements will also be given to the kids 4 via house-to-house on the same day.

To recall, healthy buns was developed by the United States Agency for International Development in the 1970s to overcome malnutrition in the country.
